An immersive audio-visual experience that transforms field recordings of birdsong into dark, experimental electronic soundscapes. Accompanied by real-time AI-generated visuals, the performance explores the interplay between nature, technology, and human emotion.
Lost Communications is an audiovisual performance that transforms birdsong into a dark, experimental electronic soundscape. Created by composer An-Ting and creative technologist Ian Gallagher, the work features their field recordings of birds from the UK, Mongolia, Sichuan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, reimagined as a haunting musical composition. Real-time AI-generated visuals, created using Stable Diffusion, Comfy UI, and Touch Designer, respond dynamically to the music, creating a dialogue between human creativity and machine intelligence.
Drawing from extraordinary journeys – high-altitude explorations to ayahuasca rituals – Lost Communications invites audiences to explore nature’s mysteries through immersive technology, acting as a bridge between human creativity and nature’s advanced systems. The performance creates visceral, unprecedented sensations—a portal to reimagine humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

Artists
An-Ting 安婷 is a multifaceted artist, excelling in piano, electronic composition, and diverse forms of creative expression. Her signature electronic sound blends low, intense, droning rhythms with piercing, sharp screams, creating a visceral exploration of emotion and the unseen.
Described by NOTION as ‘the one-to-watch in the world of composing’, they wrote about her recent release, every dollar is a soldier/with money you’re a dragon ‘Manifesting soaring ballads that bring electronica and tender piano melodies together…’
She has led and co-created productions including HOME X (nominated for UK Theatre Awards, first presented in Barbican), CAN X Two Temple Place: Digital Exhibition and Immersive Performance (Arts Council England’s Digital Culture Award – Storytelling), Augmented Chinatown 2.0 (an app for AR, music and drama), Lao Can Impression (Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room) and Bats and Beats (Soundstate Festival, Shanghai tour).
Between 2018 and 2023, she led the National Portfolio Organisation Kakilang, placing emphasis on establishing an artist-led structure, generating new narratives by Southeast and East Asian artists, and encouraging cross-artform collaborations. Her background presents a unique fusion of science and art, holding a degree in Chemistry from National Taiwan University, alongside a MMus and PhD in performance from the Royal Academy of Music.
Ian Gallagher studied Theoretical Physics at Edinburgh before completing a PhD in Complex Systems at Manchester University. He was heavily involved in the music scene in Manchester, as a sound engineer and gig promoter as well as playing on stage with artists including Daniel Johnson and Neva Dinova. He helped found a digital agency – OH Digital – before moving to London and becoming an independent app developer and entrepreneur. He has helped to create high-profile apps for Christie’s, Formula One and the Olympics among many others, and co-founded a startup, Myriada, focused on the harnessing of collective intelligence. He has a keen interest in the exploration of consciousness and the emergence of collective thought and behaviour.
More recently he has had great success in bringing digital technology to live performance, online and in the Barbican. His creative technology works have won Arts Council England’s Digital Culture Award (Storytelling) and have been nominated for the UK Theatre Awards (Digital Innovation). More recently his work has been presented at the East Kowloon Cultural Centre, Hong Kong’s flagship Arts-Tech venue and he has become a core contributor to the generative AI open source arts community.
